Most people imagine Santa as busiest in winter, flying through snowy skies and preparing for Christmas Eve. But have you ever wondered what Santa does when it’s sunny at the North Pole?
Believe it or not, even Father Christmas enjoys a summer holiday, although, being Santa, there’s always a little magic involved. Here’s what a typical summer day in Santa’s life might look like…

Santa Claus’ Day
6:00 am – Early Morning With the Reindeer
Santa is always an early riser. Summer mornings at the North Pole begin with a visit to the reindeer paddock.
While Rudolph and the team aren’t preparing for Christmas flights just yet, they still need exercise and care. Santa likes to start the day by feeding the reindeer, checking harnesses, and taking them for a gentle morning run over the Arctic snow.
Rumour has it Rudolph loves summer because there are far fewer foggy nights to navigate.
8:00 am – Breakfast with Mrs Claus
After reindeer duties, it’s time for breakfast.
Mrs Claus is famous for her baking, but in summer she likes lighter treats — berry pancakes, warm pastries, and fresh lemonade made with Arctic berries.
Santa usually enjoys breakfast while reading letters children have sent throughout the year.
Yes — children write to Santa in summer too.
10:00 am – Checking In at the Toy Workshop
Even during summer holidays, Santa can’t resist popping into the workshop.
The elves use summer for planning new toy ideas, testing inventions, and getting a head start before the Christmas rush.
Santa may spend the morning:
- Inspecting new toys
- Helping elves brainstorm gift ideas
- Reading the Nice List progress reports
- Sending a few surprise letters to children
Because even Santa can’t stay away from the workshop for too long.
12:30 pm – Picnic by the Northern Lights Lake
Summer lunch often means outdoor picnics. Santa, his wife, Mrs Claus, and the elves love gathering by the sparkling North Pole lake for sandwiches, sweet treats, and storytelling. Sometimes the elves play lots of games.
Sometimes Santa tells old stories about famous Christmas Eve adventures. And sometimes… There are snowball fights before they head back home!

2:00 pm – Santa’s Summer Hobbies
Even Santa needs hobbies. In summer, Father Christmas enjoys:
- Fishing in icy streams
- Gardening (yes, the North Pole has magical gardens)
- Polishing sleigh bells
- Practising new routes for Christmas Eve
- Reading adventure books in a hammock
- Keeping his good list updated
- Going to explore nature
Some say Santa even takes beach-style holidays, though his idea of a beach may involve snow instead of sand.
4:00 pm – Writing Back to Children
One of Santa’s favourite summer activities is replying to letters. Children are often surprised to learn Santa writes outside Christmas, but he loves sending magical notes all year round.
A summer Santa letter might include:
- Updates from the North Pole
- What the elves are building
- How the reindeer are trained
- Encouragement to be kind and adventurous during the summer holidays

5:30 pm – Reindeer Training Time
As Christmas gets closer, the reindeer begin gentle flight practice. Summer evenings are often spent:
- Practising take-offs
- Racing over snowy hills
- Playing reindeer games
- Testing the sleigh
Rudolph, naturally, still likes to show off.
7:00 pm – Supper and Stories
After dinner, family and friends gather for stories from history. The elves love hearing tales of legendary Christmas deliveries from years gone by, the time Santa landed on a pirate ship, or the Christmas Eve when a snowstorm almost delayed the sleigh.
These are some of Santa’s favourite moments.
9:00 pm – Watching the Stars
Before bed, Santa often steps outside to look at the stars. Even in summer, he likes checking the skies he’ll fly across the world on Christmas Eve.
And sometimes he makes notes… just in case he wants to surprise a child with a special letter. While Christmas may be months away, Santa’s summer is still full of adventure, kindness, and a little North Pole magic. From reindeer training, rest, and elf inventions to surprise letters and sunny Arctic picnics, Father Christmas stays busy even on holiday.
And who knows, perhaps while Santa enjoys his summer break, he might just have time to send a magical letter your way, too.
